500 YEARS OF PAINTING. The museum's permanent collection consists of works from the Italian Renaissance, the Dutch Baroque and the Danish Golden Age. Three genres predominate: portraits, landscapes and religious motives.
The Renaissance and the Baroque. The Renaissance is represented by a number of Italian artists such as Giovanni Bellini, Cima da Conegliano, Lorenzo Lotto, Bernardino Luini and Sofonisba Anguissola. Works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Pieter Breughel the Younger represents Northern Europe. The museum also has a fine collection of landscapes from the Dutch Baroque by Jan van Goyen, Salomon Ruysdael, Aert van der Neer and Jacob van Ruysdael. One of the pearls of collection is a landscape by the French painter Claude Lorrain. Another genre that is well represented is portraits, including portraits by Rembrandt and Cornelis de Vos.
The Danish Golden Age. The collection of Danish Golden Age art consists of a number of works by the foremost painters of the period, among them C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, J. Th. Lundbye, Wilhelm Marstrand, Martinus Rørbye and P.C. Skovgaard.
